FSL Leadership and Learning

Leadership education lives at the center of Fraternity and Sorority Life at the University of North Alabama. The leaders our Greek organizations develop demonstrate accountability and build community. From the moment a student joins a chapter, FSL provides structured opportunities to learn, grow, and lead in the classroom, the house, and beyond.

Below is an overview of the educational programs that every member can expect to participate in during their time at UNA.

National Hazing Prevention Week

During the last full week of September, UNA joins campuses across the country to observe National Hazing Prevention Week (NHPW) so that our students can talk openly about hazing — what it looks like, why it exists and persists, and how members can help end it. UNA’s FSL hosts events throughout the week to educate students and involve them directly in hazing prevention efforts.

Required Educational Programs

Each semester, Fraternity and Sorority Life presents an educational programming calendar—typically one to two events per term—covering topics like:

  • alcohol safety
  • hazing prevention
  • career readiness
  • interview skills
  • bystander intervention

Attendance requirements vary by event and chapter.

Recent programming has included sessions like Break the Cycle of Hazing, a Lunch & Learn with UNA Athletics, and a campus-wide Hazing Prevention Education Program in Norton Auditorium — all designed to bring chapters together around shared values rather than just check a box.

New Member Course

Every student joining a fraternity or sorority completes a required online course through Canvas, automatically assigned after they accept membership. The six-week course is built around four modules:

  • What is Fraternity and Sorority Life?
  • Why is risk prevention important?
  • What role do we play in creating an inclusive campus environment?
  • What is the value of Fraternity and Sorority Life?

New members must pass with a 60% or higher. The course is designed to give every new member a shared foundation in the history, values, and responsibilities that come with Greek membership.
