Light the Fountain

The Harrison Fountain comes alive every spring when hundreds of Lions pack Laura Harrison Plaza to celebrate together.

Light the Fountain started simply. In 1955, UNA dedicated a plaza and fountain of Italian limestone to Laura Harrison. In 2015, President Ken Kitts looked out his office window and was surprised to see the fountain glowing. Someone had turned it on for the first time since winter. He believed everyone—students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the broader Shoals community—should get to feel what he felt. Reflecting on Light the Fountain, President Kitts said, "No other campus in the South—no other campus in the United States—has Light the Fountain. This is all ours."

The following spring, UNA began a new tradition that endures as one of the most anticipated nights of the year.

Light the Fountain is part pep rally, part block party, part unofficial welcome to spring. The evening boasts food trucks, fireworks, music, and your presence. At the right moment, the water springs forth.
