Every August, hundreds of UNA students dip a pencil in the Harrison Fountain for a little extra luck and to stir up tradition.
It started as a joke. In the summer of 2013, SOAR counselors told incoming freshmen that dipping a pencil in the Harrison Fountain on the first day of class would bring good luck for the whole semester. On a sweltering August morning, the counselors showed up half-expecting no one to follow through. Stunned, they watched as droves of students came with pencils.
The Student Government Association took notice and turned the prank into an annual tradition. Last August, SGA handed out more than 1,000 pencils to students lining up for their shot at good luck.
This year's UNA Lucky Dip is August 19, 2026, from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Grab your pencil, dip it in the fountain, and start the semester off right.
